About Drainage & Stormwater

Rainfall results in stormwater and stormwater runoff is collected by drainage systems such as storm drain systems. The storm sewer system drains first take water a water treatment facility before discharging into streams, rivers, and eventually the ocean.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has the Storm Water Management Module (SWMM) which  is used for planning, analysis, and design related to stormwater runoff, sanitary sewers, and other drainage systems. The module is used to evaluate gray infrastructure stormwater control strategies like storm drains. The SWMM was developed to help support local, state, and national stormwater management objectives to reduce runoff through infiltration and retention, and help to reduce discharges that cause impairment of waterbodies.
