[ARCHIVED] Roundabout Update and Basics for Navigation

Paving of Watertown’s roundabout is expected to be complete and open to traffic by the weekend of July 25-26, 2015. Driving through a roundabout is different from a standard intersection, the public is asked to remember a few simple rules:

Vehicles
• Slow down and keep to the right as you approach the roundabout
• Yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk
• Yield to traffic on your left already in the roundabout
• Enter the roundabout when there is a safe gap in traffic
• Traffic moves in a counterclockwise direction
• Do not stop in the roundabout
• Yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk as you exit

If you encounter Emergency Vehicles
• If you have not entered the roundabout, pull over and allow emergency vehicles to pass
• If you have entered the roundabout, continue to your exit, then pull over and allow emergency vehicles to pass
• Avoid stopping in the roundabout

Trucks
• Both the truck and the trailer will need to use the truck apron to navigate the roundabout
• Trucks with 53 foot trailers should have no problem fitting through the roundabout
• Trucks with trailers longer than 53 feet may have problems fitting through the roundabout and should avoid this intersection

Pedestrians
• Use designated crosswalk areas only
• Cross to the median island when safe
• Wait in the median island to cross other lane of traffic when safe
• Never cross to the center island

Bicyclists
• Can proceed as a vehicle or pedestrian, whichever is more comfortable
• Walk your bicycle through the crosswalks if you are proceeding as a pedestrian
