[ARCHIVED] Watertown Fire Rescue Recognizes Fire Prevention Week

The Watertown Fire Rescue is recognizing Fire Prevention Week, observed October 5–11, 2025. This year’s national theme—“Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home”—highlights the growing need for awareness and safe practices when using and disposing of rechargeable batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries power many common household devices such as e-bikes, leaf blowers, phones, smart watches, wireless ear buds, cameras, tools, toys, and more. While convenient, they can pose fire risks if damaged, improperly charged, or thrown away with household trash.

The Watertown Fire Rescue reminds residents:
‣ Never throw lithium-ion batteries in household trash or recycling bins—they can spark fires in trucks or at the Landfill.
‣ Charge batteries in open, well-ventilated areas and unplug once fully charged.
‣ Stop using devices with swollen, leaking, or damaged batteries.

“Across the country, we see more fires tied to lithium batteries,” said Fire Chief Don Rowland. “Most can be prevented with simple steps—use the correct charger, never overcharge, and dispose of damaged batteries properly.”

Please take a moment this week to review battery safety practices and help prevent avoidable fires in our community.
