Watertown Fire Rescue crews were called to a structure fire just before 6:15 pm at 45961 165th Street, Waverly, SD. Passerby noticed heavy black smoke coming from a private farm site with heavy tree coverage. Initially it was unknown what was burning. Once on scene crews found an old abandon farm house fully engulfed in flames. High winds pushed the flames over the tree tops causing the trees to catch fire. That tree fires spread embers to the ground causing the tall grass to also catch fire. Watertown responded with Engine 1, Tender 1, and Brush 3. Mutual aid was requested from South Shore Fire who brought 1 Tender, 1 Fire Engine, and 1 Brush truck to the fire. Crews battled the fire for just over 3 hours. The house was a total loss. WFR was assisted on scene by Codington County Sherriff deputy, South Shore Fire Department, Codington County Emergency Management and Codington Clark Electric.
