Watertown Regional Landfill
and Solid Waste Collection
Household Garbage Collection Guidelines
Residents must place all of their garbage inside their container. The lid must be closed when the container is placed out for collection and no refuse should be exposed. A closed lid is intended to keep your garbage from blowing out of the container and becoming a litter problem in your neighborhood.
The container is dumped with an automated truck so trash placed on the ground near the can is not collected. Please be aware that the automated truck may not fully empty a container that is tightly packed. Placing the garbage in tied plastic bags reduces the potential for litter when the cart is emptied, helps to reduce odors, and helps to keep insects away. Placing garbage in tied plastic bags will also keep the inside of the container cleaner.
Place the container at the curb facing the street with the lid shut. Obstacles may prevent the arm on the automated truck from reaching your container. Do not place the container close to obstructions such as vehicles, mailboxes, or another container. Please allow 4’ on either side of the container.
The Watertown Sanitation Department urges residents to place their trash out the night before their collection day to avoid missing the truck. Collection routes begin at 5:00 AM, and there is no set time when they will cover a certain area of town. Trucks are not rerouted to pick up containers that are put out late.
Finally, all waste containers placed on the parkway or boulevard on the day of collection shall be removed on the same day following collection.
