At 12:13pm on Wednesday, April 16th, 2025, Watertown Fire Rescue (WFR) was dispatched to the area of 44622 170th St, 1.5 miles west of Lake Kampeska, for a grass fire. The fire started on the south side of Codington County Rd 10 and spread across the asphalt highway to the north prior to WFR's arrival. Henry VFD and Florence VFD were requested for assistance. The fire spread through a row of trees along the roadway before being contained. Many of the old Ash trees ignited as the fire passed through causing a labor intensive process to extinguish the fire. Multiple trees had to be cut down as the fire quickly spread upward through the trunks of the trees. The property owner was able to provide machinery to help contain the fire and move trees. The fire spread to about 5 acres in total. Fire crews were on scene about 5 hours. Codington County Sheriff's Department was also on scene doing traffic control.
