Watertown Fire Rescue responded to a mutual aid request from South Shore Fire Department on 4/5/2021 just after 6pm. A controlled burn by a land owner had gotten out of control due to the predicted high winds that moved into the area around 6pm. South Shore crews asked for mutual aid due to the rapid spread of the fire and the need for additional equipment and manpower. WFR responded with 2 brush truck and a water tender truck. Once one scene WFR assisted South Shore Fire with getting the burn under control and stopping the southward spread of the fire. Once the fire was contained crews mopped up hot spots around the perimeter and also in a small tree grove. Crews were on scene for approximately 1 1/2 hours. There were no injuries and no home or livestock were threatened. WFR was on scene with South Shore Fire and Codington County Emergency Management.  WFR would like to remind residents before starting a controlled burn, you need look at both the short term and long term weather forecast and plan accordingly. It only takes a second for a controlled burn to become out of control.
