[ARCHIVED] WFR Responds to a grass fire

May 2, 2020

Watertown Fire Rescue was dispatched to a grass and rushes fire near Pelican Lake and Fish Road at 530pm on Saturday afternoon.  The fire was started by persons illegally setting off fireworks near the lake.  The fireworks started grass and rushes burning in a slough area.  High winds caused the fire to spread rapidly.  WFR responded with three brush trucks and a water tender.  Crews used hand lines to extinguish the fire.  There was a large downed cottonwood tree that was also involved.  Crews used a chainsaw to cut the tree into pieces and fully extinguish the fire.  Fire crews were on scene for about one hour.  WPD is investigating the incident to decided if citations will be issued.

WFR would like to remind everyone that fireworks do have a legal season and city ordinance prohibits shooting fireworks within the city limits.
