WPD News Flash Image

In these uncertain times, there are people looking to take advantage of our concerns and fears regarding COVID-19.

In these uncertain times, there are people looking to take advantage of our concerns and fears regarding COVID-19. The Watertown Police Department is stressing extra caution and vigilance before opening emails or clicking on web links claiming to have information on this virus. We are also reminding our citizens to take extra precautions and keep their valuables secured by locking your homes, garages and vehicles.

Here are some tips for helping you stay safe from scams related to COVID-19.

1. Don’t click on links from sources you do not know.

2. Look closely at all emails about COVID-19. Many companies are sending emails regarding their company practices and how to reach out to them for assistance during this time. Please be sure the email address is correct before opening the email.

3. Watch for emails claiming to be from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization. Rather than clicking on the email, go to the agency website for the most current information available.

a. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019nCoV/index.html

b. World Health Organization https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novelcoronavirus-2019

4. Ignore online offers for vaccines. There are not currently vaccines or medications to treat or cure COVID-19.

5. Do research before donating to charities or people for assistance related to COVID-19 to be sure it is a legitimate charity or organization. Do not let anyone pressure or rush you into donating.
