FLOOD OPERATIONS CONTINUE IN WATERTOWN

Watertown officials are continuing to reinforce public infrastructure around Watertown in preparation for rising water over the next few days.  The Big Sioux River is anticipated to drop slightly in the next 24 hours and then begin to rise once again beginning Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.  The crest of 12.7 feet is expected around 1:00am Thursday morning, March 28th at the South Broadway gauging location.

Park Construction of Minneapolis, Minnesota continues their work on the assembly of Hesco Baskets on Kampeska Boulevard. Kampeska Boulevard remains closed for all vehicle traffic at this time from 4th Avenue South to Kemp Avenue.

Watertown Utilities worked throughout the day today to protect the utility substation, located on Fish Road using Hesco baskets and sandbags.

The sandbag fill station, located at the Codington County Extension Building, will run from 7:00am to 1:00pm tomorrow. Those who are able to volunteer are asked to call (605) 882-6272.

Since yesterday over 12,000 sandbags have been filled. They sandbags are being used to secure public infrastructure.

Many thanks to the volunteers who has donated their time to help protect Watertown.

Those who need sandbags to protect their private property can still pick them up at the Codington County Jail.  Sand is available at the following locations:

  • City of Watertown Street Department - 730 Arrow Avenue
  • Outdoor Swimming Pool - 825 3rd Street SW
  • Lake Kampeska @Sailboat Landing - 200 block of North Lake Drive
