WATERTOWN OFFICIALS ARE URGING RESIDENTS TO BEGIN MAKING PREPARATIONS FOR FLOODING ON THE BIG SIOUX RIVER

City of Watertown and County officials are continuing to monitor the increasing water levels on the Big Sioux River this weekend. This morning (Saturday) officials were in contact with the Army Corps of Engineers who are now advising that “advanced measures” are necessary and are encouraging Watertown residents to begin taking steps to protect infrastructure in and around their homes. Officials are concerned that warm temperatures compounded by the potential for rainfall this week will increase water levels resulting in quick snowmelt and flooding conditions in Watertown.

Residents are encouraged to begin sandbagging around their residences both in town and at Lake Kampeska. Sandbags are free of charge and are available at the Codington County Jail located at 119 South Maple Street.

Sand is located at:

  • City of Watertown Street Department -730 Arrow Avenue
  • Outdoor Swimming Pool -825 3rd Street SW
  • Lake Kampeska @ Sailboat Landing – 200 block of North Lake Drive
  • Lake Kampeska Boat Launch at Jackson Park – 300 Block of South Lake Drive
  • The Intersection of Kemp Avenue and Kampeska Boulevard.

Officials are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updates to the public as they become available.
