On 03/05/2019 at approximately 10:36 pm, a Watertown patrol officer conducted a traffic stop in the 10 block of 1st Avenue NW. During the course of the stop, the officer became suspicious of drug activity. The officer requested assistance from a Watertown K9 officer. The K9 was deployed and alerted to the odor of illegal drugs emitting from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately a quarter-pound of methamphetamine, approximately a half-ounce of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia including syringes.
The 29-year-old male driver (Kurtis Duke) and 22-year-old female passenger (Nikita Zambrano-Ross) were arrested for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana less than two ounces, and possession of drug paraphernalia. They are being detained at the Codington County Detention Center. Bond amounts are pending.
Possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and being in possession of over $300 is a Class 3 felony, punishable up to 15 years in prison and a $30,000.00 fine. Possession of a controlled substance is a Class 5 felony, punishable up to 5 years in prison and a $10,000.00 fine. Possession of marijuana (less than 2 ounces) is a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable up to 1 year in jail and a $2,000 fine. Possession of drug paraphernalia is a Class 2 misdemeanor punishable up to 30 days in jail and a $500.00 fine.
