Watertown Regional Library

Posted on: April 1, 2014

[ARCHIVED] Watertown Regional Library updates to biometric library management software.

Biometrics is an exciting alternative to library cards as a way of recording and identifying users through fingerprint recognition. Heritage Biometrics will allow readers to access their records and perform circulation functions by just scanning their fingerprints, increasing both speed and security.

Starting September 2014, the library will no longer be issuing users with cards that can be easily lost and contribute to long queues forming at the circulation desk as users rummage in bags trying to find them.

A biometric compatible app will be available to anyone using the library’s electronic resources. Those using devices that do not support apps will be issued a unique identifier.

**The actual fingerprint is not recorded; it is merely a numeric formula generated from some of the characteristics of the fingerprint. It is not possible to reverse engineer an image of a fingerprint from the formula. APRIL FOOLS!
