Watertown Fire Rescue responded to a grass fire 8 miles west of Watertown on Hwy 212 Sunday night at about 11:30pm. Upon arrival, a small fire was found in the ditch on the west side of Hwy 212, by the S Curves. The fire was started by the occupant of a vehicle that discarded a cigarette. That person was cited for littering. The fire burned less than acre, and Watertown Fire was on scene for about 30 minutes. The Codington County Sheriff Department assisted. WFR reminds you that if you start ANY fire, intentionally or not, you can be held liable for any damages and may be subject to a fine associated with it. This includes recreational fires as well as controlled burns. Always contact both the Watertown Police Dept and Watertown Fire Rescue prior to any controlled burn you plan on starting.
