Every October, the Watertown Street Department asks contractors to discontinue digging in city streets due to the seasonal closure of the asphalt hot mix plant.
Starting Oct. 25th, 2017 through May 1st, 2018, only in an emergency situation (such as water service/main breaks), are contractors allowed to dig in city streets. It will be the contractors’ full responsibility to maintain, daily, any trench dug after October 25th, 2017 until the following season when it’s able to be properly repaired.
The Street Superintendent may require the contractor to patch the trench with concrete (depending on the roadway in which it exists) to create a temporary hard surface until it can be properly repaired in the spring of the year.
As a reminder, any digging in city streets requires a permit through the Watertown Engineering Department (605) 882-6200 and a phone call to the Watertown Street Department (605) 882-6207.
