[ARCHIVED] Media Release-Utility Scam

The Watertown Police Department has been notified this morning of a utility scam that is occurring in Watertown. A person posing as a representative from Municipal Utilities is calling asking to verify payment account information. In one case the caller told the customer that their utilities would be disconnected if they did not verify their account information.

Watertown Municipal Utilities has verified that this is a scam and would not ask for this type of information over the telephone. Residents are reminded that if ANYONE calls you over the telephone and asks for credit card information or to verify their payment account information they should refuse to give out this information and hang up.

If you believe you have been the victim of a scam and have suffered a financial loss, you should contact your financial institution and the Watertown Police Department.
