At approximately 11:15 pm on 9/8/2016 WFR crews responded to a 2 vehicle accident on I-29 southbound lanes at MM 172. WFR responed with Rescue 51 and Medic 3. Upon arrival crews found a 2 vehicle rear end collision with major vehicle damage.
One vehicle was left disabled in the driving lane. Crews established a safe working zone because heavy rain and hail was moving through the area causing decreased visibility. Paramedics assessed all patients involved and all parties refused further medical care and no one was transported to the hospital via ambulance.
The vehicle disabled in the driving lane recieved heavy front end damage but the driver was wearing their seatbelt and airbags did deploy in the car. The other was a full size pickup that recieved heavy rear end damage and this vehicle ended up in the west ditch, both occupants were okay. WFR was assisted on scene by South Dakota Highway Patrol and Performance Towing.
WFR would like to remind drivers of the "Move Over Law" that requires motorists on South Dakota Interstates and other highways with two or more lanes traveling in the same direction as the vehicle, must merge into the lane farthest from the vehicle and proceed with caution, unless otherwise directed. The law now requires you to move over and slow down when passing any vehicle displaying amber or yellow flashing lights.
Please slow down so all safety crews can return home unharmed.
