On 08/29/2015 at about 3:35PM Mr. Christopher Brown was stopped for speeding in about the 800 block of 4th Avenue SW. During the traffic stop it was discovered that Brown was on Parole and had recently been released from prison. The officer asked for consent to search the vehicle Brown was driving. Brown then took off at a high rate of speed westbound. Due to the time of day and traffic level the pursuit was discontinued for public safety. Methamphetamine paraphernalia including a hypodermic needle was located on the roadway a short time later.
At about 4:56PM the vehicle Brown was driving was located in between a tree line and corn field in about the 3400 block of 4th Avenue SW. The Codington County Sheriff’s,SD Highway Patrol, and the Watertown Police Department searched the area for Brown.The Codington County Search and Rescue also aided in the search but Brown was not located at that time.
At about 9:47PM the Police Department received a report that a male, later identified as Brown was discovered by a homeowner and her children inside their home located in the 3800 block 3rd Avenue NW. Brown stole the victim’s cell phone and vehicle and fled the area. No one was physically harmed during the encounter.
At about 10:22PM a Deuel County Deputy located Brown driving the victim’s vehicle southbound near mile-marker 156 on I-29. A vehicle stop was conducted and Brown was taken into custody. Brown was transported to the Codington County Detention Center. Brown is being held on a Parole Detainer. Bond for the current charges of 1st Degree Burglary, Grand Theft, Eluding in a Motor Vehicle, Reckless Driving, Failure to Obey a Traffic Signal, Possession of a Controlled Substance (meth), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia is pending.
