In conjunction with the State Fire Marshal's office, Watertown Fire Rescue would like to make sure each and every home in Watertown has a working smoke alarm.
The free alarms will be available on a first come, first served basis. There is a limited supply of free smoke alarms. All you have to do is call WFR at 882-5030, schedule picking up your alarm or alarms, then install them in your home. If you cannot install your own alarm we will assist you in doing so.
There are a few guidelines as far as placement of the alarms, and we will also provide that information at the time of pickup or installation. If you don't have a working alarm now is your chance to make it happen!
If you already have working alarms, here are some reminders. Alarms should be replaced every 10 years, and batteries checked monthly. Remember to change batteries at the same time you change your clocks, once in the spring and once in the fall. You should have a working alarm in each bedroom, in the hallway outside of each bedroom or sleeping area, and one on each floor of your home.
Smoke alarms save lives in the US every year. Here are some facts about them....
* In 2007-2011, smoke alarms sounded in half of all fires reported to U. S. Fire Departments.
* Three out of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes that had no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
* No smoke alarms were present in 37% of home fire deaths.
Thanks for staying fire safe!
Watertown Fire Rescue wishes you all a Happy Holiday Season
