Media Release - 10-14-25 - Motor Vehicle Crash (1)

On Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at approximately 7:21 AM, the Watertown Police Department and Watertown Fire/Rescue were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of 9th Avenue SE and 5th Street SE. A 2014 Jeep Wrangler, that was being operated by a 21-year-old Watertown male, was travelling south on 5th Street SE, through the intersection, when it collided with a northbound 2019 Ford Escape that was attempting to turn west onto 9th Avenue SE from 5th Street SE.  The Ford Escape was being operated by a 24-year-old Watertown female.

No injuries were reported and both drivers declined medical attention.  Both vehicles sustained disabling damage and were towed from the scene.

Following an investigation, the driver of the Ford Escape was cited for Failure to Yield (SDCL 32-26-19), Expired License Plates (SDCL 32-5-2.4) and Failure to Use Seatbelts- Front Seat (SDCL 32-38-1).

The Watertown Police Department was assisted by Watertown Fire/Rescue.  

Traffic was partially diverted around the intersection for approximately 35 minutes.
