[ARCHIVED] City of Watertown: Ash Tree Marking and Removal

EAB TREE REMOVAL

After Labor Day, you may see boulevard trees marked with a red “X.” These are untreated ash trees identified for removal due to Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).

Emerald Ash Borer kills ash trees by cutting off their ability to move water and nutrients. It will eventually kill all untreated ash trees. As these trees decline, they weaken quickly and create safety risks. By removing them, the City is taking a proactive step to protect residents and reduce future costs for the community.

Tree removals will begin in Ward D after Labor Day. After a tree is marked, removal will happen within weeks unless an extension is filed. Ward D Residents: If you plan to have a licensed arborist treat your boulevard ash tree during the next treatment window (May–August 2026), you may request a one-year extension to delay removal. Filing an extension delays removal for one year to allow for the first treatment. Extensions should only be requested if treatment is planned. Apply at: www.watertownsd.us/EABextension

Treated boulevard trees will be tagged and remain in place. Stumps will be removed within a few months after tree removals are complete.

If your boulevard ash tree is removed, you may call (605) 882-6260 to be added to the boulevard tree replacement list. For more EAB information or updates, visit: www.watertownsd.us/EAB.
