[ARCHIVED] No Mow Initiative

Parks, Recreation, and Forestry is implementing a "No Mow" program in select areas across the city following recommendations from the recent Parks Master Plan. Approximately 20 acres have been identified that will no longer be mowed on a weekly basis.

These areas are less frequented public spaces where grass and vegetation will be allowed to grow naturally. The goal is to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, promote biodiversity, and reduce maintenance costs. Educational signs will be posted at each "No Mow" area explaining the program's purpose and benefits. The Parks Board has reviewed and approved these sites.

One highlight is a 5-acre site south of the Zoo that will be converted into a native grass and pollinator habitat area in partnership with the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks.
