Adolph Hitler hoped to use the 1936 Olympic Games as a showpiece of Aryan Superiority. Jesse Owens upended Hitler’s objectives. That same year, German boxer Max Schmeling defeated Joe Lewis for the heavyweight boxing championship. By examining the Berlin Olympics and other sporting events, a better understanding of both Nazi ideology and American reactions to that ideology is possible.
